Halloween John Orr Dance Guest List

October31

Yes I’m a big geek but it makes life easy sometimes. I’m going to the John Orr dance this year and wanted an easy way to see who else is going. The list they give you right now is an alphabetical PDF. I wanted an Excel version that would allow me to group people by year and degree so I can easily find people I know. I figured since I did all the geeky leg work I’d just share the list with the world (jonorroct31.xls).It’s current as of today. I might do an update if I feel the need to see a new list or if someone bugs me. I might be compelled to do the dinner list as well if someone bugs me.

Oh snap! Creditors could touch this! (that was an awful joke but it’s the best I could come up with after 5 seconds of thinking about it)

Polarity Rocks

October14

I’m a massive geek and love Polarity. I decided to take some cool pictures of the game:

Note: This isn’t an active game… I just have the game on my coffee table for both a fun distraction and decorative flair. ;)

Tasty Table

Via Militant Geek. This is a great table that shows what keeps me energized and going…. mmmm… tasty:

I like how Milk is #8…. aka Oxygen on the real periodic table.

Vote on October 10th

October4

Make sure you go out and vote in the provincial election. This election is quite important, not because we are voting in our provincial representatives, but because we are voting on the future expression of democracy in Ontario (and possibly Canada down the line).

A proposal spawned from a Citizens Assembly (comprised of 130 random Ontario citizens) which evaluated possible changes in our electoral and representative system in Ontario. They’ve decided to propose to the Ontario people that we adopt MMP over FPP. This is something we will be voting on and rather than prattle on about the differences myself, I’ll let a group of very smart people share the process and the issues with you.

I strongly suggest you listen to the above panel discussion. I originally thought I knew how I’d vote–I’m not so sure any more.

Way to Advertise

October3

So this Facebook flyer caught my attention today. Can you guess why?

It’s funny because the girl has nothing to do with what they’re trying to push. For lack of a better picture they just figured showing some girls cleavage would help them make some cash. I guess this is inline with how MSN advertises. Sex still sells.

This place is screwed

October1

So I guess this is my first mo-blog restaurant review. I’m currently checking out a new Italian place that opened up in my neighbourhood called Piatti. A large and fancy looking place with prices to match. I’m pretty sure they are screwed. Why? Reasons:

  • Awful service. When I walked in everyone kind of looked at me and went back to what they were doing. After the girl finally came over I asked for a spot on the patio and she just turned around and walked away to get a menu, no “follow me” or anything.
  • They don’t seem to carry any of the wines on their list. My out of the 5 wines they sell by the glass they only had 2 of them. I didn’t really want either of my choices but I settled.
  • They don’t know how wine should be served. Serving white whine in a red wine glass is fine if you’re east side mario’s but if you’re positioning your biz as a fancy place, serving me the incorrect glass tells me that I’m better off a micky-d’s. That and the wine drinking experience is ruined. Fancy place=high prices but also excellent experience… Maybe they didn’t get the memo.

We’ll see if they get their act in order. Otherwise it looks like there will be a nice new building to rent at 150 Eglinton east in a few months.

Update: It was even bad at the end. I waited 10 min after finishing my wine and the waitress never returned. I got up and went to the front to get my bill and then had to wait 5 min for them to come up with $5 worth of change.
