Self Censorship of the Press

March27

It’s a sad day when the media self senors themselves to to this degree. Time magazine actually put out a separate cover in the United States:

The question is if this censorship is occurring because of fear of the government or the people?

Sad… So Very Sad…

March27

I think I need help/opinions. Recently I’ve been thinking of giving W0W a second chance. It might be because I feel the need to reassert my geeky tenancies. Maybe all this b-school stuff is spurring this on.  Of course, stories like this remind me why I left a lot of the gaming scene behind. Weird people.

Thoughts? Support? Server suggestions? :)

Technosexual?

March19

Come on? Sounds more like yuppysexual. These “techonosexuals” don’t deserve the term—they’ve never really dealt with tech. Having a big screen T.V. and an iPod doesn’t make you a geek.

Yes I’m annoyed that they’re diluting the idea of a geek to a yuppy. First compile your own kernel, then call yourself a geek. This is just another lame way of trying to sell people shit they don’t need.

Image Profile

I came across a cool site that uses images to determine “who you really are ” it’s called VisualDNA. Here are my results:

Hotlinkers Be Gone!

March16

There are three (1, 2, 3) myspace profiles which are hotlinking directly to a picture on my domain for use as their background. This seems to be the result of Google returning a 3D render from my site as the first result for “tropicalsunset.” I don’t know why but the hotlinking bothers me… It shouldn’t since I have so much bandwidth, but it does.

I’m debating replacing the image with the Goatse.cx picture and plastering the following text over top of it: Don’t hotlink, and have a nice day. It might be a little much though.

Happy PI Day!

Vacation Wrap-up

March12

Well, I got home this morning at 2 AM and was woken up by some construction workers at 9 AM. This is wonderful since I only had 4 hours of sleep on the previous 2 nights. ugh.

Here’s a description of my vacation by use the the public pictures I’ve posted over here:

Air Canada sucks. They totally made the start of my vacation suck. I got up at 3AM to go to the airport and waited for 1.5 hours in a line to check my baggage. Apparently they thought scheduling 4 flights, all leaving for the USA, at 6:30 AM wouldn’t cause any problems. When I finally managed to get to the gate, the lady at the counter told me that the plane was greatly oversold and there were 5 people without seats. She was bumping me. Luckily for me though, a family of 4 had 3 tickets and refused to fly separately so they got bumped instead I got a seat. Once on board the plane we were informed that the Captian was not on board but would be shortly. A mere 2 hours later, sitting on the tarmac, the Captain arrived to command us on our 3 and change hour flight.

Arrival time: 12:15 pm. Here’s a picture of the line for checking baggage:

My vacation finally started, here’s the first thing I did followed a picture of the room:

At some point during the first 36 hours, I won a bottle of champaign and a trophy for representing my team in a “name that jazz tune” contest. We lost 7 to 4 but the consolation prize was considerably better than what I was given for losing at floor hockey back in the day:

First stop, San Juan for the evening. I did some sight seeing, had some dinner, and then partied at this great place called senor Frog’s. They have this big plastic container called a “yard” which they fill up with whatever you want. The place feels like a frat party. Some pictures of the party:

Next day, St. Thomas. Best beach in the world (Megen’s Bay). Here are some pictures from the day:

Next stop, Antigua:

Next stop, Tortuga. Yes, the same Tortuga that was in Pirates of the Caribbean. There are some commercialized pirate themed things that I did see but nothing authentic seems to remain. Some general pictures:

I saw a few scotiabank branches during my trip, here’s the one in Tortuga:

I went snorkeling. Here is the Captain of our boat:

Me snorkeling:

At one point when we were moving to a different location we apparently stole the equivilant of an open water parking space from another boat. The Captain of the other boat, drunk, started cursing and yelling at us. The only non-curse word I could make out was mutiny. Maybe the pirate heritage is alive and kicking? Picture of the other boat whose parking spot we stole:

We then headed back to Florida. Of course, no Caribbean trip is complete without the obligatory fruity drink:

There are loads of other public photos (161 to be exact) so take a look at them. There’s lots of stuff I skipped.

Now I have to clean my apartment which I left in a state of total disarray, unpack, do laundry, and get ready for classes tomorrow.

My Programmer Type

March1

Your programmer personality type is:

DHSB

You’re a Doer.
You are very quick at getting tasks done. You believe the outcome is the most important part of a task and the faster you can reach that outcome the better. After all, time is money.

You like coding at a High level.
The world is made up of objects and components, you should create your programs in the same way.

You work best in a Solo situation.
The best way to program is by yourself. There’s no communication problems, you know every part of the code allowing you to write the best programs possible.

You are a liBeral programmer.
Programming is a complex task and you should use white space and comments as freely as possible to help simplify the task. We’re not writing on paper anymore so we can take up as much room as we need.
